  2. Dear Colleague:

  4. We have launched the development of "A Statistical Package for
  5. the Personal Computer" (SPPC) which is designed for use with the
  6. IBM PC and compatible computers. Although the SPPC contains only
  7. a few programs at present, they are quite powerful and more will
  8. be added in the near future.
  9.  
  10. You can test the SPPC programs by use of two data files on the
  11. diskette. A raw data file has the name LONGLEYR.DAT and a summary
  12. data file has the name LONGLEYS.DAT -- or you can test the
  13. programs by using your own data. 
  14.  
  15. We have included the Longley data because they constitute a
  16. severe test for any multiple regression program as described by
  17. Peter Lachenbruch in his article which appeared in the November
  18. 1983 issue of BYTE Magazine. We are pleased to tell you that the
  19. SPPC Multiple Regression program produced a completely accurate
  20. solution to the Longley data (none of the programs that were
  21. reviewed by Lachenbruch would do that).

  23. As you will see by using the enclosed diskette, we are attempting
  24. to produce powerful and highly accurate statistical software at
  25. very modest cost to the user. Moreover, as the package grows
  26. users will be able to purchase only those procedures they need or
  27. want.

  29. If you or your firm decide to purchase these materials you will
  30. be placed on a mailing list and notified of additions to the
  31. SPPC. Moreover, if you decide to purchase one or more of the SPPC
  32. programs we shall provide updates for Version 1.0  for the cost of
  33. postage and handling. Regardless of your purchase decision we
  34. would be most interested in your suggestions and your evaluation
  35. of these materials.

  37. We are most interested to know what additional procedures you
  38. would like to see included in the SPPC. Since we are in the
  39. process of developing the entire package you can tell us exactly
  40. what you would like to see. We'll do everything we can to
  41. accomodate your needs and interests.

  43. By all means, pass this demonstration diskette on to friends or
  44. colleagues who may be interested.
